According to CapFriendly: 10 teams will receive bonus overages as a result of insufficient cap space at the end of the 2016-17 NHL season.

NHL Finalizes Bonus Overages for 2017-18

The Toronto Maple Leafs were hit the hardest, as was expected. With many rookies including Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and William Nylander, the Leafs were anticipating a big overage heading into the 2017-18 season.

As long-term injured reserve does not cover bonuses, Nathan Horton, Stephane Robidas, and Joffrey Lupul do not help the Leafs in this case. The Leafs have a $5.37 million overage for the upcoming season, the largest since the 2013-14 Boston Bruins.

The Chicago Blackhawks were also hit hard with overages. With Artemi Panarin, Brian Campbell, Gustav Forsling, and Michal Kempny earning bonuses, the Blackhawks cap situation has gotten even more complex. With Marcus Kruger yet to be traded and Marian Hossa’s health in question, Stan Bowman’s job has gotten even tougher this offseason.

Arizona also incurred a heavy penalty of nearly $2.5 million. As a team with an internal cap, these overages do not affect the Coyotes as much as the Leafs or the Blackhawks.

Also receiving penalties in excess of $1 million were the Philadelphia Flyers and the Edmonton Oilers.

Receiving relatively minor penalties include the Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Washington Capitals.

Narrowly avoiding penalties were the Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche, Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Tampa Bay Lightning.
