Travis Hamonic Traded to the Calgary Flames

The New York Islanders have traded defenseman Travis Hamonic to the Calgary Flames along with a fourth round pick in either 2019 or 2020. In return the Flames send the Islanders their 2018 first and second round picks and a second round pick in either 2019 or 2020. Hamonic brings a great amount of talent to Calgary’s defensive corps. The 26-year old blueliner has been a key piece to the Islanders’ squad the past seven years, racking up four 20-plus point seasons and one 30-plus point season.

Back in 2015, right before the beginning of the season, Hamonic put in a trade request- one that would send him to Winnipeg and would have him playing for the Winnipeg Jets, his hometown team. As the 2015-16 season went on, the rumours continued to circulate and the question was- “when would he go?” However, as the season concluded, Hamonic rescinded his trade request, saying he wished to remain with the Isles.

The 2016-17 season arrived and Hamonic played in 49 games, scoring three goals and tallying eleven assists. A knee injury mid-way through the year let him out for 33 games, putting a dent in the Islanders defence.

The need of a top scoring forward to play alongside John Tavares as well as the looming expansion draft proved all the reason for the movement of Hamonic, whom the Islanders knew would bring them a good return. Now with the Calgary Flames, Hamonic can get back to work and show that he is indeed an elite defenseman.

Drafted 53rd overall in 2008, Hamonic entered NHL play in 2010. In his career, he has skated in 444 games, scoring 26 times and adding 120 assists along the way. In 17 playoff games, Hamonic has tallied four points including one goal.

In terms of contract history, Hamonic has three seasons left on the ultra club-friendly deal he signed back in 2013 that was scheduled to pay him $27 million over seven seasons ($3.9 million AAV). That is his only standard contract outside of his entry-level deal.
