Randy Carlyle Signs Contract Extension with the Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks have agreed to a one-year contract extension with Randy Carlyle. Carlyle just finished his 12 season as a head coach in the league. His first seven years were spent in Anaheim, before he was replaced 24 games into the 2011-2012 season. Carlyle went on to finish off that year with the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he spent the next four years before being replaced in 2014-2015 by Peter Horachek.

Randy Carlyle to Spend Another Season with the Anaheim Ducks

After being let go by Toronto in 2015, Carlyle went on to sit out the next season. Anaheim took a chance on Carlyle during the 2016 off-season, after firing Bruce Boudreau. He had won one Stanley Cup with Anaheim, in 2007, and led the team to six playoff appearances in seven years. Coming into the 2016-2017 season, expectations were high for Carlyle. He had a good team to look over, and had a good coaching history.

Carlyle lived up to expectations. The Ducks went 46-23-13 in the latest season, winning the Pacific Division. The end of their season was exciting, and they went into the playoffs riding high. They faced, and swept, the Calgary Flames in the first round. The Edmonton Oilers simmered the Ducks hot streak in the second round, beating them twice to start off the series. Anaheim fought back, and the series eventually reached Game Seven. Anaheim won 2-1, and went on to face the Nashville Predators in the Western Conference Finals. Although Anaheim seemed to outplay Nashville most of the series, they lost in six games.

The trip to the Conference Finals was the first for the team since 2015, when they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks. It also marked the third time Carlyle has led the team to the third round of the playoffs. Following a very successful season, and deep run into the playoffs, Carlyle’s extension was well deserved. The team isn’t sold on him yet though, and he’ll have to prove just as impressive next year if he wants to commit to the Ducks long term. Carlyle is 61 years old, which makes him one of the oldest head coaches in the league, but he could easily stick around for a few more years.
