Andrej Sekera Out 6-9 Months With Torn ACL

One of the best defenseman on the Oilers will miss part of next years season as the Edmonton Oilers announced today that Andrej Sekera has a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli announced the news earlier today. Sekera suffered the injury during game five against the Anaheim Ducks after Ryan Getzlaf hit him into the boards and was ruled out for the rest of the series as the Oilers were eliminated in seven games.

In 11 Stanley Cup Playoff games this year, Sekera had a goal and two assists. He also averaged just over 21 minutes a game. That put him fifth among defenseman on the team. During the regular season, he had eight goals and 27 assists to accumulate to 35 points in 80 games. Chiarelli said that Sekera will have surgery this Thursday. With that timeline, he is likely to miss at least the first couple months of next season; if not more. The Oilers may need to shore up the blueline in the off-season.

During the playoffs, Sekera was on the second pairing with Kris Russell while Oscar Klefbom and Adam Larsson were on the top pairing. This was his second season in Edmonton as last year he had six goals and 30 points in his first season. Sekera still has four more years left on the six-year deal he signed with Edmonton in 2015. He makes an annual salary of $5.5 million per season.
