The New York Islanders have signed Dennis Seidenberg to a one-year contract extension. Seidenberg was a pleasant surprise for the Islanders this past season. After signing with the team during training camp, he was a solid veteran defenseman for the club. The deal is for $1.25 million.

New York Islanders Sign Dennis Seidenberg to Extension
After being bought out by the Boston Bruins, where he once won a Stanley Cup, Dennis Seidenberg played for Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey in September without a contract. This past season, he showed that he could still contribute at the NHL level.
Seidenberg put up five goals and 17 assists for 22 points in 73 games this past season. The 35-year old has taken on a veteran role on the blue-line for the Islanders, to give their defensive prospects more time to develop, and help some of their younger guys mature on the back end.
Seidenberg is a valued commodity for the Islanders. A veteran defender who has plenty of playoff experience is a great addition for any team looking to make a playoff push.
Calvin de Haan and Adam Pelech both become restricted free agents in the summer. Since neither is over the age of 26, it’s likely that the Islanders want to lock them up.
This contract is a raise on the one-year, $1 million contract he signed this past September.
With the expansion draft approaching, it is likely that the Islanders will leave Seidenberg exposed, helping to fulfill their requirement to leave experienced NHLers available for the Vegas Golden Knights. It is unlikely that the expansion team will be interested in a 35-year-old defenceman though.
