According to a report from Newsday, the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic will be making its debut in New York City next year as it’s going to be held at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. The New York Rangers will host the Buffalo Sabres on January 1st, 2018.

The Rangers and Sabres have both appeared in one Winter Classic before as the Sabres were the first to host the event back in 2008. They hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins at New Era Field, home of the Buffalo Bills. The Rangers played the Flyers in the 2012 Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia against the Flyers so this game will feature two teams who have only played in it once.

New York has also played a couple of the NHL Stadium Series games in New York. In late January of 2014, they played the New Jersey Devils and the New York Islanders at Yankee Stadium which was two of the Stadium Series games played that year.

The Winter Classic started in 2008 and has continued ever since. It’s always been held around the eastern half of the United States. The Chicago Blackhawks have played in it three times, one of them being this past year. The Penguins, Flyers, Bruins, Red Wings, and Capitals have all played in it twice.
