vThe National Hockey League Department of Player Safety announced early Sunday morning that Washington Capitals defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk would be having a hearing regarding a charging call assessed to him during Saturday’s match-up between the Caps and the Los Angeles Kings.

Kevin Shattenkirk Suspended Two Games for Charging
The incident occurred in the third period of the game when Shattenkirk charged and hit Kings’ defenseman Kevin Gravel. Shattenkirk was assessed a two minute minor penalty and Gravel was okay after the hit. Shattenkirk shot the puck in to the King’s zone and wrapped it around the boards. He followed through and continued to skate up ice and around to the back of the net, where the puck was. Gravel pivoted at the same time in an attempt to get to it also. As Gravel got to the puck, Shattenkirk launched himself up high, both skates having left the ground, and delivered a hit to Gravel. Since Shattenkirk has had no prior history with the Department of Player Safety, they found a two game suspension to be acceptable. Shattenkirk will forfeit $47,222.22 of his salary during the suspension, the money going to the Player’s Emergency Assistance Fund.
Shattenkirk was traded to the Caps two days before the March 1 deadline from the St. Louis Blues. This season, Shattenkirk has skated in 67 games, tallying 11 games and 35 assists for a total of 46 points. In his career, Shattenkirk has played a total of 477 games with 66 goals scored and 222 assists. He was the 14th overall pick by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
