Monday the Buffalo Sabres extended defenseman Justin Falk to a new one year contract, keeping him in Buffalo until the summer of 2018.

Buffalo Sabres Extend Justin Falk To One Year Deal
Falk’s current deal, also a one-year contract, is worth $650,000 per year according to Capfriendly.com and the new deal will have an identical cap hit.
Falk, 28, has played 35 games with the Sabres this year primarily alongside Taylor Fedun as the team’s third pairing. In 218 minutes together they have posted some solid possession numbers with a corsi of 52.47%. Those numbers haven’t translated to much production however. Falk sits with just 4 assists and zero goals on the season. He has never been known for his offensive acumen, having scored just 2 goals and 27 points in 206 games. In his 35 games this season he has average 13:11 of ice time per game, the lowest among all Sabres defenseman with at least 10 games played.
Something to note about the deal is the Falk is just 5 games away from fulfilling the requirements for the expansion draft. This would mean that Falk could be the defenseman under contract for next year that the Sabres decide to leave open for the Vegas Golden Knights’ draft this coming June.
Falk, in his ninth NHL season, has played for four different teams in his career. He has never played a full 82-game schedule, with his highest number of games coming in the 2011-12 season where he played 47 games with the Minnesota Wild. Meaning this year will likely end up being his best season yet.
