Ottawa Senators Re-sign Zack Smith to Contract Extension
Senators general manager Pierre Dorion announced on Monday that the team had officially re-signed the 28-year old forward. The contract has an annual average value (AAV) of $3.25 million, and will take Smith through the 2020-21 NHL season.
“We all feel that Zack is a core piece of our team,” Dorion told media members.
Smith was selected 79th overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.
Smith currently has 11 goals and 11 assists for a total of 22 points in 43 games this season. He is also averaging a career-high 16:13 time-on-ice per game.
Smith saw a career-high in goals last season when he scored 25 goals and 11 assists in 81 games. In 443 career games, all as a member of the Senators, Smith has recorded 75 goals and 61 assists for a total of 136 points.
“I’m very happy to get this done and I’m looking forward to the future here in Ottawa,” Smith told media regarding his deal. “The direction the team is going in was one of the biggest selling points.”
Sunday’s 7-6 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets saw Smith score two goals on the night. The Senators currently hold a 25-15-5 record on the season and sit second in the Atlantic Division. The team will play the Washington Capitals On Tuesday night in Ottawa.
