Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Jhonas Enroth to the Anaheim Ducks
The Leafs acquire a seventh-round pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft in return for Enroth. The trade was announced by the team just after 1 a.m. EST.
The Maple Leafs signed Enroth as a free agent in the off-season with plans for him to play backup to goaltender to Frederik Andersen. However, Enroth struggled this season putting up an 0-3-1 record with a 3.94 goals-against-average and .872% save percentage.
Enroth was waived in December and assigned to Toronto’s AHL affiliate team, the Toronto Marlies. He put up a 2-1-0 record with a 3.03 goals-against-average and a .904% save percentage before being called back up by the Leafs on Sunday.
Backup Options
The extensive search for a solid backup goaltender continues for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Shortly before this trade, the Leafs claimed goaltender Curtis McElhinney off waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.
With Enroth gone, the Leafs will look towards McElhinney or Antoine Bibeau to be the backup goaltender for the remainder of the season.
McElhinney has a 2-1-2 record this season playing for Columbus with a 2.39 goals-against-average and a .924% save percentage. Over the course of his entire career, McElhinney has a 45-59-12 record with a 2.96 goals-against-average and a .905% save percentage.
Antoine Bibeau has been the Leafs backup goaltender for the recent portion of this season after Enroth was assigned to the Marlies. He has a 1-1-0 record this season with a 1.98 goals-against-average and a .927% save percentage.
The Leafs will have to decide who will play backup to Andersen in the next couple of days. The Leafs will play the New York Rangers in New York on Friday.
