With an assist on Aleksander Barkov‘s third-period goal for the Florida Panthers against the Boston Bruins, Jaromir Jagr has recorded his 1,888th career NHL point, moving into sole possession of second on the all-time scoring leaderboard.

The goal cut Boston’s lead to 2-1 midway through the final frame. Jagr entered the game tied with Mark Messier on 1,887 career points, and passed him with his 19th of the 2016-17 season. The game in Florida was paused for a brief ceremony, where he was presented with a golden stick by the Panthers. Addressing the crowd at the BB&T Center, Jagr joked about his method of scoring, pointing out that he would have preferred a better goal or assist, rather than a deflection.

Jagr, 44, now trails only Wayne Gretzky, who is well ahead of him with 2,857 total points. With 1,663 games played in his NHL career over 26 seasons, the Kladno, Czech Republic native’s career is the fourth longest all-time.
In Tuesday’s 4-3 shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres, Jagr drew level with Messier’s total by recording three assists.
