Corey Crawford Injury Update: Out 2-3 Weeks

According to team reports on Saturday, Crawford became ill with acute appendicitis. Head Coach Joel Quenneville expects Crawford to miss some time while he recovers.

“Corey underwent a successful appendectomy today in Philadelphia,” Blackhawks head team physician Dr. Michael Terry said in a public statement. “We anticipate a full recovery and for Corey to return to unrestricted hockey activities in 2-3 weeks.”

Going Forward

The Blackhawks are currently 16-7-3 and sit second in the league standings. Crawford particularly has a 12-6-2 record with a 2.27 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in 20 games this season. Crawford’s absence can end up having quite the impact on the Blackhawks.

Backup goaltender Scott Darling is expected to make most of the team’s upcoming starts in Crawford’s absence. Darling currently holds a 4-1-1 record with a 2.81 GAA and .907 save percentage this season.

The team also had to resort to signing an amateur goaltender for Saturday night’s game. The Rockford IceHogs, the Blackhawks AHL affiliate, had a game in Grand Rapids, Michigan, making it impossible for a backup to travel in time for the game. The Blackhawks signed Eric Semborski, who played for Temple University, to an amateur tryout to be an emergency backup for Darling.

The Blackhawks play the Winnipeg Jets Sunday night in Chicago.
