NHL Free Agency and training camp always seem to go hand-in-hand. Players you thought to be long gone are coming out of the woodwork yet again. There are a few names recently that have either signed with a team, or have been brought on for a professional tryout contract.
NHL Free Agency And Training Camp Updates
Dominic Moore
Dominic Moore has signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Boston Bruins today. This will see the now 36-year old play his first season with the Bruins. It will also be his 13th season in the NHL. He has played 765 career games in which he has scored 89 goals and 245 total points.
Raffi Torres
Raffi Torres has been brought into the Carolina Hurricanes training camp on a professional try-out. The volatile 34-year old has stated that, if left unsigned by an NHL team come season, he will likely retire from hockey altogether. Torres hasn’t played a game in the league since the 2013-14 season, in which he only played in five. During his 635-game career, he has scored 137 goals and has 260 total points.
Chris Higgins
Chris Higgins is another name that has been brought in for a PTO, this time with the Calgary Flames. Higgins is a relatively reliable depth forward but spent nearly half of last season with the AHL-affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, the Utica Comets. He’s spent the last six seasons with the Canucks in which he played in 314 games and racked up 142 total points. He also played a 12-game stretch with the Flames back in the 2009-10 season, scoring two goals during his time there.
Jarret Stoll
The third name on this list to have been offered a PTO this week is Jarret Stoll. The Columbus Blue Jackets have brought the veteran center into camp likely for the purpose of competition. If Stoll is to get a contract it would mean that he would be competing with Sam Gagner and William Karlsson for the third and fourth line center spots on the depth chart. Stoll has had periods of success scoring throughout his career, but those days are likely behind him. Stoll has played in 872 career games in which he has scored 144 goals and 388 total points.
