LSU has now capped off an encouraging Spring camp with more positive news, as one of the most coveted 2027 prospects in the country could no longer wait to make his decision public. Five-star tight end Ahmad Hudson of Ruston, LA has committed to LSU. Hudson recently canceled several visits, moved his decision date up, and cut his school list down to Nebraska and LSU. He has now ended the suspense and added another talented pass catcher to the Tigers’ class.
Ahmad Hudson Commits to LSU
Sealing the Deal
It’s reasonable to believe that LSU held the inside track on Hudson’s commitment, considering his connections to the program. Hudson’s father, Antonio Hudson played basketball for the Tigers in the early 2000’s. His former teammate, Aidan Anding is a redshirt freshman cornerback for LSU who was having a great Spring camp before injuring his Achilles.
Nebraska jumped on Hudson early in his high school career and established itself as a legitimate contender to land him. Hudson also received a scholarship offer to play basketball for Nebraska. Despite the best efforts of the Cornhuskers, LSU’s new coaching staff, combined with the allure of staying home, eventually won out for Hudson.
Ahmad Hudson As a Prospect
As a prospect, Hudson’s athleticism is striking. He ranks as the top tight end in the country in the 247Sports composite football rankings and the fourth-best power forward in its basketball rankings. The dual-sport star received offers from both the football and basketball programs of LSU. He’s currently ranked as the third-best player in the state regardless of position.
Standing at 6’-7” and 240 pounds, Hudson has elite size for the tight end position. But he’s much more than a big body. He uses his explosive vertical to high-point the ball in jump ball situations. His combination of size and speed makes him a legitimate downfield threat, but Ruston also uses him extensively in the short-to-intermediate game. Despite his rare ability as a receiving tight end, he’s also an effective in-line blocker.
Moving Forward
Hudson’s commitment comes on the heels JUCO cornerback Lavonte Williams committing on Saturday to LSU’s 2026 class. LSU’s 2027 class now has two 247Sports composite five-stars in a group with only five players. The class features two receivers and quarterback Peyton Houston, who was recently invited to the Elite 11. With several highly touted players set to commit soon, this class could grow significantly over the summer.
LSU’s 2027 class could speak to Lane Kiffin’s long-term approach to recruiting moving forward. It will be his first class at LSU that he’s had a full year to assemble. Though Kiffin is known as a coach who uses the transfer portal heavily, the so-called portal king has expressed the desire to build his program primarily from the high school ranks. If that’s the case, this is a great time to capitalize on a talented group of in-state seniors. The state of Louisiana has six uncommitted players ranked among the top 247 prospects in the 247Sports composite, including five-star offensive lineman Albert Simien. To add to the intrigue, Texas commit and New Orleans native Easton Royal has become a regular on LSU’s campus. Royal is the top-ranked wide receiver in the country.
The loaded crop of local products could springboard the program into a position to use the portal to fill holes in the roster, rather than build it. In turn, the program would gain stability by developing a core group without the unpredictable nature of adding 40 transfers in the off-season. Furthermore, the cost of signing a recruiting class with a majority of high school recruits is significantly lower than signing a class filled with proven veterans.
