Dylan Spencer Committed To Texas Tech

Dylan Spencer Committed

The expectations for new Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire coming into the year were not so much centered around wins and losses. It was more about seeing competitive football and an ability to not let games slip from their fingers. But, this is also a program that has made any major waves on the recruiting trail in quite some time. However, that has all changed in McGuire’s first full recruiting cycle. And while many of the four-star recruits McGuire has signed were verbally committed prior to the season starting, this latest one was a late flip. Thanks to relentless recruiting efforts in the 11th hour, Dylan Spencer committed To Texas Tech on Wednesday. This brought the 2023 class to a total of 25 commitments.

Late Push Got Dylan Spencer Committed To Red Raiders

Spencer had been verbally committed to the University of Texas since March 15th of this year. This is a four-star defensive lineman that already had offers from USC, Texas A&M, LSU, Baylor, Arizona State, and Houston before he originally gave his verbal commitment to Texas. But the Texas Tech staff, led by   James Blanchard and Zarnell Fitch were able to convince him to come for an official visit on December 16th. Just two days later, Spencer flipped his commitment from the Longhorns to the Red Raiders. And on Wednesday, he made his flip official. So what does the defensive lineman from Houston, Texas bring to a very veteran defensive line?

Adding Quality Depth At the Defensive Line

The 6’4 defensive lineman will need to add mass as he is only listed at 240 pounds. He will have an opportunity to develop as the Red Raiders are getting two major key pieces back up front defensively. Senior leaders Tony Bradford Jr. and Jaylon Hutchings announced on December 6th they would be returning for the 2023 season. So the pressure to produce early won’t be immense for Spencer. But he is one of the top 50 defensive linemen in this 2023 class. Spencer’s senior season produce plenty of big numbers, including 75 tackles, 20 of which were for a loss. He also added nine sacks, 33 quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles in 13 games. Spencer should develop into another anchor point for the defensive front.
