In a not-so-surprising result, Alabama quarterback Bryce Young wins the Heisman Trophy for 2021. The sophomore has had an amazing year for the Crimson Tide. He finished with 4,322 passing yards, just ahead of Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and good for fourth-best in the country. Further, Young threw for 43 touchdowns and just four interceptions in his second season at Alabama.
He beat out Pickett, Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, and the lone defensive player in the running, Michigan defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson. The final voting put Young in first and Hutchinson in second, followed by Pickett and Stroud, respectively.
Young was named the winner of the 2021 Maxwell Award as the best all-around player in the nation. He won the award over Pickett and Michigan State running back Kenneth Walker III. If that wasn’t enough, Young also won the Davey O’Brien Award for the top quarterback in the nation.
Not only has Young had an award-winning campaign, but he has also led Alabama back into the top four and into the College Football Playoff. He is also just the fifth true sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy. Former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was the first sophomore to take home the honor in 2007.
Young joins a shortlist of Alabama standouts to win the Heisman Trophy. He becomes the fourth Crimson Tide player to win and the second in the last two years. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith took it home in 2020.
