REPORT: Demond Demas To Start In Light Of Ausbon Opt-Out

Demond Demas

With the departure of senior wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon, all of the Aggies ‘ senior pass-catchers are out for the 2020 season. While Ausbon hasn’t been a super star during his time at A&M, he has been consistent. A younger Kellen Mond relied heavily on Ausbon, often looking to him whenever a play broke down. The chemistry between the pair is clearly stronger than any other receiver has with Mond. In 2019, he led the team in receiving yards (872) and catches (66), and was second in receiving touchdowns (5). Now that he has opted out to prepare for the NFL Draft, – a draft in which he is predicted to go undrafted in – the Aggies will have to find someone to fill his spot.

There have been words of Kam Brown and Chase Lane to have breakout years. Together, they have a total of three catches for forty-three yards. Some expect the long and lanky Caleb Chapman to be listed as WR1, while others are leaning with Jalen Preston. Freshman superstar Demond Demas has been on the list of potential starters as well. Even as a true freshman, “Hollywood” Demas was expected to contribute greatly, even before the Ausbon decision.

Demond Demas reported To Start At Wide Receiver

Now, however, it seems the decision has been made. According to The Footwork King, Rischad Whitfield, it will be Demond Demas who is the starting #1 recevier for Texas A&M. In a Twitter thread concerning who will earn the starting position, Whitfield responded to a tweet doubting Demas’s ability to pick up the playbook. “Demond knows the playbook,” Whitfield explains. “He’s been working all off/season on it, he’s been ready.” Here’s the big news: “He’s starting, he’s playing and he’s going to ball ** out Saturday night.”

Whitfield is a renowned footwork and agility coach. He has been working with Demas for years and the two clearly have a close relationship. The Houston based trainer has also worked NFL players like CeeDee Lamb, Odell Beckham Jr., Darius Slay, Eric Ebron, and Emannuel Sanders to name just a few. He has over 140k followers on Instagram and has an impressive resume of enhancing players quickness and ability to react. While Whitfield is not a coach for Texas A&M and does not make decisions in regards to the depth chart, he is knowledgeable enough to take his word seriously.

The Logical Decision

It makes sense for Demas to be selected as the starting wide receiver. Despite his youth, he has the size and skill-set to be the man the Aggies need – and expect – him to be. For a full profile on the new starter, click here.

While Texas A&M will miss Ausbon and his experience, most people within the know around the organization are not worried. There is a stable of young talent waiting to hit the field and ball. Coach Jimbo Fisher has been around long enough to know how to roll with the punches and the talent he has managed to recruit is expected to be a solid backstop for situations such as this. The pass-catchers might be young, but it seems the Aggies are still deep at the receiver position. Now, only time will tell if the young bucks can make a difference in the ever talented SEC.
