Chris Mayo Signs Letter Of Intent With The Mountaineers

Almost immediately upon the January 2019 arrival of Neal Brown and his staff in Morgantown, the staff assessed West Virginia’s needs for the 2019 season and beyond. Offensive line coach Matt Moore expressed his surprise at West Virginia’s seeming lack of depth across the line. And both he and Brown committed to focusing on that pressing need. Indeed, the 2019 season played out as anticipated.  The Mountaineers sent out three inexperience lineman as starters the majority of the season. Brown and Moore, however, identified Chris Mayo early. Indeed, they secured a verbal commitment from him all the way back in June. We learned that commitment stuck earlier today as Chris Mayo signs his letter of intent with the Mountaineers.

Mayo is a four-star guard out of Hightstown, New Jersey.  Measuring 6’5″ and 325 pounds, Mayo fits the mold of the linemen that Moore has had success developing. Chad Scott was instrumental in securing the commitment, and the staff kept in constant communication with Mayo through the course. It is easy to see why, too.

Reviewing his film, we see an impressive body of work. Mayo routinely push opposing defenders to create running lanes for his offense in the run game. Mayo also offers excellent pass protection, holding blocks and preserving a clean pocket for the valuable seconds required to let downfield routes develop. So while Mayo’s size is hard to miss, the staff certain has to like his potential based on his strength and technique.

Mayo provides West Virginia with \their first four-star high school offensive lineman since Quinton Spain, who came to Morgantown as part of its 2010 recruiting class. His commitment demonstrates the staff’s clear focus on reworking and developing the offensive line. As a result, Chris Mayo offers a solid addition to the Mountaineers’ 2020 recruiting class, which we will recap at the conclusion of the Early Signing Period.
