The biggest recruit for UCLA both in terms of recruiting stars, and actual size is Sean Rhyan, and he signed with the Bruins today.
Rhyan is a 6-5, 302-pound offensive tackle from San Juan Hills High School in San Juan Capistrano, CA . He is a four-star recruit, per the 247Sports composite and the 9th best in the country at the position according to those same rankings. The stand-alone 247Sports rankings have him as the #3 tackle recruit in the county.
Rhyan can already squat 500 pounds and bench 340 but has good footwork for a guy his size. He is very aggressive in taking on multiple rushers at the high school level.
He had offers from Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, Stanford, and both Arizona schools. But he had narrowed it down to Washington, USC and UCLA by October. Without many postings on social media, the recruiting process was pretty quiet for Rhyan, but he did do an interview with Trojan Insider in early November, talking about his three finalists. With regards to UCLA, it was about the coaching staff. “I like talking to Coach (Chip) Kelly, because he has a different look on things. I don’t want to say he’s Zen like, but he has a relaxed and methodical way of looking at things. I’ve been talking a lot with Coach (Justin) Frye. He’s a younger guy and he’s doing a good job with the OLine.”
Rhyan committed to UCLA one week before Frye was named offensive coordinator for the Bruins. UCLA returns all of their starters on a vastly improved offensive line, but depth has long been issue. If Rhyan lives up to the scouting reports, he will be in the mix right away.
