Kentucky Wildcats 2019 Recruiting Profile Nik Scalzo

One of the more important positions for Mark Stoops and the Wildcats to focus on in 2019 is quarterback. The Cats already have one pledge in Amari Gilmore and picked up a second in Nik Scalzo.

The pro-style quarterback from out of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida ranks as the 24th best QB in the 2019 class. In addition Scalzo rates as the 85th best player in the Sunshine State. He was recruited by quarterbacks coach Darrin Hinshaw and picked Kentucky over Akron, Buffalo and Central Michigan.

A Bad End To The Season

Scalzo led Cardinal Gibbons for three seasons leading them to a 32-6 record. However in the regional finals against Jones he tore his ACL. Scalzo was injured in the second half but only missed one drive. He returned to the game leading his team to a 30-27 victory. Despite his injury the Chiefs went on to win the state championship.

In addition to Scalzo the Cats have another player from Cardinal Gibbons in the 2019 recruiting class. Tight end Nikolas Ogenovic committed to Kentucky back in July. He ranks 27th in the country at his position. Ever since Stoops came to Lexington getting players out of the Sunshine State has been a priority. As a result this year is no exception as four of the 21 commits are from Florida.

How Scalzo Fits In With Kentucky

As mentioned earlier behind Terry Wilson the Wildcats quarterback ranks are in a state of flux. Third string quarterback Danny Clark already announced he is transferring after the season. Backup Gunnar Hoak finishes school in May and there is a good chance he may look elsewhere. As a result of being a graduate Hoak could play immediately in 2019.

Due to his knee injury it’s questionable whether Scalzo is even ready for fall camp. However Wilson only has two years remaining and the battle will be on between him and Gilmore for the starting nod in the future. He already has a championship pedigree and should get ample opportunity for playing time.
