LSU Tight Ends Must Be Utilized Under Steve Ensminger

LSU Tight Ends

LSU tight ends have become an under-used factor of the team’s offense. Though the Tigers always have elite running backs and wide receivers, the tight ends unit deserves attention as well. New offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger should utilize the unit within his new offense, as well. Whether Myles Brennan or Lowell Narcisse start at quarterback, expect the Tigers to throw the ball more than normal. Ensminger has stated multiple times that he will sling the ball and become more of a pass-heavy team. However, the Tigers do have a stable of running backs to work with as well. But the tight ends may finally get some work on the receiving end. LSU’s offense has under-used these players over the years. That time may finally be up.

LSU Tight Ends Deserve Better Roles

Yes, tight ends are great blockers in terms of pass and run blocking. But what about earning receptions and scoring touchdowns? This is a question that has haunted LSU fans for seasons now. Under former offensive coordinators, the Tigers hardly threw the ball to the tight ends. With Ensminger leading the charge, that is likely to change. Senior Jacory Washington has the best chance to be the starter at the position. Washington has seen little playing time, but has the capabilities to contribute heavily within the new scheme. Ensminger needs to set in a scheme for the tight end to have an extended role. With a pass-heavy offense, it only makes sense to throw corner routes and other plays to the tight end.

Last season, Foster Moreau became a fan favorite at the position. If Washington can prove that he deserves a role with the team, then hopefully fans will see the position have a greater use in the new scheme. Even with the talent they have at wide receiver, LSU needs to give Washington and the other tight ends a definitive role in order to have signbificant success in 2018. The expectations for this year are already very high in Death Valley. However, Ensminger should spread the ball around in the passing game and allow the pass-catchers to get their fair share. Moreau was utilized greatly, and Washington is hoping to fill that role.

Final Thoughts

For LSU to have success in 2018 offensively, the Tigers must give the tight ends unit the role they deserve. Place in a scheme to get them the ball inside the 20-yard-line and prove that this offense can thrive when spreading the ball around to every pass-catcher. The amount of success that Ed Orgeron and the program could have would increase by a huge margin. If 2018 really is their year, the Tigers have to prove it in every single game. Though we have yet to see the new scheme, the spring game is April 21 and Ensminger should showcase just a sneak peek of what is to come this season. Tiger Nation is prepared for a great season, however, it all starts with the new-look offense.
