Oklahoma State Has A Record Breaking Day

Oklhoma State Has Record Breaking Day

The Cowboys finally earn a victory for the first time in three years! Oklahoma State’s offense completely demolished the Baylor Bears in a route this past Saturday, on their way to a record breaking day.

Quick Recap:

At the start of the second half, the game was knotted at seven to seven. The Bears looked like they were going to play State tough in this one just as they had against Oklahoma. Then, the second quarter started and the wheels fell off of the Baylor defense’s game plan. Oklahoma State’s offense went on a tear, putting up 28 second quarter points to Baylor’s one field goal.

Offense on Fire:

The Cowboys offense never looked back. They went on to secure an easy victory with a score of 59-16. The offense had a record breaking day. They tallied 747 total yards of offense. The majority of which, came from big chunk plays for massive yards.

Playmakers:

There were a number of playmakers for the Cowboys record breaking day.

Mason Rudolph continued his Heisman campaign with 459 yards passing and three passing touchdowns. He added a rushing score for the 3rd straight week as well. Rudolph has thrown for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in all six games the Cowboys have played this season.

James Washington was the recipient of a touchdown pass from Rudolph. He had a total of 6 grabs for a whopping 235 yards receiving (3rd 200 yard game in career). Washington added a two yard rushing score to his receiving performance as well. With his touchdown Saturday, Washington took over third place on the all-time Oklahoma State receiving touchdowns list with 32 touchdown grabs.

The other big receiver of the day was Marcell Ateman. He hauled in only four catches but he made them count. Ateman totaled 117 total receiving yards and was also the recipient of a Rudolph touchdown pass.

Justice Hill had another 100 yard rushing day (his fourth of the year). He totaled 117 yards on the ground for the day. The lone touchdown run Hill had went for 79 yards from scrimmage.

Defense feast or famine:

On the other side of the ball, the Oklahoma State defense didn’t have a record setting day. They did play a very solid game though. The Cowboys defense allowed only 387 total yards of offense. The downside to that, was the Bears’ ability to rush the ball. As a team, they had 276 rushing yards. As if that weren’t enough of an eye-opening stat, Baylor had just under eight yards per rush. The Bears had control of the ball for the majority of the game with 35:39 time of possession. Those types of stats do not usually produce a win and it’s obvious that Oklahoma State has to find an answer against the run.

Against the pass, the Cowboys defense only gave up nearly five yards per pass and a total of 168 passing yards. The Cowboys defense was able to come up with two interceptions to set the record breaking offense up with good field position. If they can keep that type of production up on defense against the pass, maybe they will balance out the inability to stop the run.

Next Up:

Oklahoma State has a date with a Texas Longhorns team that is coming off a difficult five point loss against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Longhorns actually took the lead late in the fourth quarter and the Sooners answered with a long touchdown pass with only a few minutes left to seal the victory.

A week ago, Baker Mayfield was able to throw for 300+ yards against the Longhorn defense so that probably bodes well for Mason Rudolph. The Cowboys defense better have an answer against Sam Ehlinger at QB for Texas. Ehlinger is a true dual threat quarterback that put his rushing abilities on display against an arguably better Sooner defense as he totalled 110 yards and a touchdown last Saturday. If they can contain Ehlinger to the pocket, the Cowboys should have a good day. I would look for another record breaking day against the Texas defense, but Rudolph and company should be able to put up some good yards.
