Myles Brennan: The Dawn of a New Era for LSU

The quarterback situation in Baton Rouge is still in question. LSU has a great amount of depth at the position, though the Tigers also have inexperience. Senior Danny Etling is the only quarterback with true playing experience on the roster. With a new era dawning in Tiger Town, LSU has a task at hand to place the right player into the starting role. Freshman Myles Brennan could fit that role.

Myles Brennan: The Dawn of a New Era for LSU

Brennan just recently arrived on campus and is already drawing attention from the Tiger faithful to lead the team heading into 2017. The Tigers have yet to begin summer practice, but the hype around Brennan is real. The coveted pro-style quarterback is seeking to take over the starting role from Etling. The decision to start Brennan would not hurt the Tigers at all, and here’s why:

Brennan has the style of play that offensive coordinator Matt Canada uses to coach offense.

First year coordinator Matt Canada will have the Tigers settling with a new scheme on offense, which could include yet another two-quarterback system that the Tigers have used over recent seasons. The ideal players for that would be Brennan and Etling, given that both players are in the scheme that Canada coaches with. Switching to a dual-threat quarterback like Lowell Narcisse could potentially set up LSU for disaster. The Tigers’ recent history of using a dual-threat is horrendous and has yet to pan out the way they had hoped.

Myles Brennan could be the next best player in an LSU uniform.

The Tigers have a ton of talent on both sides of the ball heading into the season, but Brennan is bringing in a lot of hype with him to LSU. Should he get the start in Week 1, Brennan could show his elusive arm against an unproven BYU Cougars defense. The best case scenario for head coach Ed Orgeron and his staff would be to start Brennan in the opener and see how he performs against college football talent. LSU has had a bad past with coveted quarterbacks, but Myles Brennan could change that and become the next great LSU Tiger that no one saw coming.

Learning the system in a short amount of time could benefit the coveted freshman.

Myles Brennan arrived on campus in early June, and the season begins in September. That gives him roughly three months to learn every play, every audible, the whole nine yards. But having a short stint to learn a college football offense could work out in Brennan’s favor. If he can get in check with his running backs, wide receivers, and offensive line and learn the offense quickly, he could potentially take the Tigers to new heights in 2017.

LSU likely won’t start Brennan in the first game, but they should. Danny Etling proved last year that he can lead the Tigers in the right direction, but it’s time for change in Baton Rouge. Most around LSU seem to think that Etling will give the season away for the Tigers if he is named the starter. Given the way he played in the Spring Game, Etling deserves to be the second quarterback on the depth chart for LSU this season. Brennan has all of the hype, and a better arm than Etling, which is a major plus for the Tigers. If LSU is going to win the SEC West and contend for a national championship, Orgeron and his staff should highly consider placing Brennan into the starting role as we approach the 2017 college football season.
