FOX Sports analyst Jay Glazer has announced that the Seattle Seahawks have traded wide receiver Percy Harvin to the New York Jets for a conditional draft pick. While the terms of the deal have not been officially disclosed yet, ESPN reporter John Clayton believes the pick will range from the second to the fourth round.
What’s wrong with Percy Harvin? In 2013, the Minnesota Vikings shipped Harvin to the Seahawks for a 2013 first-round pick. While Harvin was injured for most of the season last year, he did make an impact in the Super Bowl against the Broncos. He ran the ball twice for 45 yards and he returned a kickoff for a touchdown. He was the best wide receiver on the Seahawks this year, and it is a bit surprising that they let him go this soon.
After losing Golden Tate to the Lions in free agency, Harvin was supposed to have a large role this year. Through five games this season, he has been very disappointing. He has only caught 22 passes for 133 yards and 0 receiving touchdowns along with 92 yards on the ground and 1 rushing touchdown. That is certainly not the impact the Seahawks expected, especially after surrendering a first-round pick for Harvin. Perhaps they were trying to get out of his contract and the Jets swooped in with their excess cap space. He is in the second year of a six-year, $64 million deal.
The Jets have been heavily criticized for not spending much money this offseason, but they found a way to do so here. Harvin will give the Jets another legitimate weapon at receiver, joining Eric Decker and Jeremy Kerley. With Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory at running back, the pressure is on Geno Smith now to utilize these weapons and prove that he can lead this team in the future. While the Jets currently sit at 1-6, their playoff chances this season are all but destroyed. However, if Geno Smith can succeed with some talent around him now, they will be much more confident going forward.
We’ll see if Percy Harvin will embrace the new environment and earn his money in New York.
