It has not been easy for Steve Nash in recent years, as he is clearly no longer playing NBA MVP caliber basketball we saw earlier in his career. Plagued with back injuries over the last couple of years, Nash must have thought this NBA season would be a chance to make good. However, yet another injury setback as the season draws nearer, will certainly dampen his spirit.
This new setback for Nash has opened the door for Lakers backup point guard Jeremy Lin. Lin was acquired from the Houston Rockets during the offseason, and will most likely step in for Nash as the starter. The Lakers had a tough year last season, and its time for the club to re-tool. Lin, a very capable backup and a former starter in the NBA with the Knicks and Rockets represents a younger option, and its possible he could be a multi-year starter in LA. Lin a player I personally have always been impressed with. He may not have the shooting ability of Steve Nash but is extremely good at taking contact whilst attacking the rim for a layup, even against some of the leagues best big men.
The injury setback for Steve Nash doesn’t mean his NBA career is over by any means, but unfortunately I personally cannot see Nash being a starter in the NBA again. Steve Nash is one of my personal favourites in the NBA, and a player I would like to see do well, but I just feel he can’t handle starter’s minutes any more.
It seems to be that coming off the bench won’t be too much of a problem for Nash, as earlier this week head coach Byron Scott clearly stated, “I have no doubt in my mind that if I went to Steve and said tomorrow, ‘you know what, I’m going to start Jeremy and the games that you’re available, were going to bring you off the bench,’ he’s such a professional that I don’t think it would be a problem what so ever.”
With Nash’s reputation for being a consummate professional throughout his NBA career, these comments shouldn’t really surprise anyone.
Jeremy Lin being made the starting point guard is good for the Lakers long term, but may come with some growing pains. Scott’s has made his first major decision as coach of the Lakers, and while it might mean a reduced role for Nash, he will still contribute for the Lakers.
While many have been making a rather big deal out of the fact a hall of fame calibre player and a former MVP of the NBA, will most likely finish their career on the bench. Knowing Steve Nash’s team first attitude, I really don’t think it will bother him. I believe he will just want to do what he can to help the team win.
