LWOS Week 7 College Football Rankings

So, Week 7 in college football lived up to its anticipatory billing. As a result, the LWOS staff has anointed a new top team in the nation. The SEC West continues to impress, and the state of Mississippi is having itself one heck of a college football season. The top of the PAC-12 continues to beat itself up, while Florida State and Notre Dame both won to set up a great Week 8 showdown in Tallahassee. Can’t wait.

LWOS Week 7 College Football Rankings

1

Mississippi State

(9)

Back-to-back wins over Texas A&M and Auburn have this team at the top of our poll. Dak Prescott has firmly moved himself into the Heisman race. – Matthew Atkinson
2

Mississippi

(2)

Dr. Bo and the Rebels return to Vaught-Hemingway to face Tennessee in Week 8, after two of the biggest wins in program history, back-to-back. Good luck with that, Vols. – Donald King
3

Florida State

(2)

Heisman Trophy Winner Jameis Winston was remarkably poised (on the field) and led his team past Syracuse in Week 7. Next up: Notre Dame at home. – Donald King
4 Baylor Baylor notched an historic win Saturday in its shiny new stadium on the banks of the Brazos, and now heads to Morgantown to take on WVU. Stay focused, Bears, and good things will happen. – Donald King
5 Notre Dame Notre Dame almost fell in a trap against underachieving UNC at home, and now visits Florida State in Week 8’s marquee game. This is the biggest game for the Irish since the National Championship Game against Alabama. – Donald King
6 Auburn Auburn got blown out by Mississippi State, but that seems to happen to every SEC West team. The Tigers will have plenty more chances to prove themselves and keep their ranking high as the season moves on. – Yesh Ginsburg
7 Michigan State Purdue trailed the Spartans by a mere touchdown with under 3 minutes left before a Darien Harris pick six sealed a 45-31 win. That’s not the way MSU wants to win if they want to impress the committee for the CFP. – John Bava
8 Oregon After a disappointing loss to Arizona, Oregon responded with an impressive win on the road against UCLA. While they have little room for error left, their College Football Playoff aspirations are still alive if they can win the Pac-12. – Al Preziosi
9 Alabama The Crimson Tide are struggling of late. Is this the end of the Saban Dynasty or are people greatly exaggerating their demise? – Mike Loveall
10 Georgia Did you see that? Georgia played by far its most complete game of the season in a 34-0 blowout of Mizzou without suspended running back Todd Gurley. They’ll look to build off the win next week at Arkansas, an improving team that came oh-so-close to knocking off Alabama. – Michael Gray
11 Oklahoma Oklahoma survived a spry challenge from a young Texas team. Can they continue to keep pace in the Big 12 with games against Kansas State and Baylor on the horizon? – Mike Loveall
12 TCU Boy, that 21 point lead in the fourth quarter looked insurmountable, right? After a 61-58 loss to Baylor, TCU looks to rebound against a dangerous Oklahoma State team. – Michael Gray
13 Ohio State The Buckeyes were idle Saturday but suddenly look like a team that could challenge Michigan State for B1G supremacy. After dominating Maryland last week, the other conference newbie Rutgers comes to the Horseshoe looking to slow down JT Barrett and company. – John Bava
14 Oklahoma State The Cowboys slipped by Kansas Saturday, and now visit some bitterly disappointed Horned Frogs at TCU. Ok St is still unbeaten in Big-12 play, and will strive to stay that way. – Donald King
15 Arizona #15 Arizona lost in a Saturday night thriller at home against the Trojans. The Wildcats lost 28-26 on a missed FG in the final seconds of the game. Arizona has to go on the road next week, and looks to rebound against Washington State. – Kaden Kotinek
16 Kansas State Bill Snyder’s Wildcats have been quietly taking care business in conference. Next up: a trip to Norman in a CFP elimination game agains the Sooners. – Donald King
17 East Carolina East Carolina earned its bye week by outlasting a stubborn South Florida squad in Tampa. The Pirates still look good to win the American Athletic Conference this season. – Donald King
18 Texas A&M The SEC West title looks well beyond them this season after another immensely disappointing loss. A visit to Alabama next week is yet another huge test for this young team. – Matthew Atkinson
19 Stanford The Cardinal visit the Valley of the Sun in week 8 to take on the Solar Satans. Big game for both teams, featuring Stanford’s stout D against ASU’s explosive offense. Key may be Taylor Kelly’s health. – Donald King
20 Marshall The Herd keep thundering along, and with their remaining schedule, they might just go undefeated. Hardest game left is their last against UAB. – Michael Gray
21 Arizona State After a miraculous victory over USC, Arizona State enjoyed a bye week. A huge game against Stanford comes up next though. – Al Preziosi
22 Clemson After a narrow victory over a solid Louisville team, Clemson has won three straight games. They should be able to cruise past Boston College next week and continue their winning streak. – Al Preziosi
23 USC USC responded to the devastating loss against Arizona State with a much-needed win against Arizona on the road. Their depth still remains a major flaw, as they continued their trend of tailing off in the fourth quarter after fatigue sets in. – Al Preziosi
24 Nebraska Nebraska is still hanging on to a ranking after their close-at-the-end loss to Michigan State. If they can stay at 1 loss in a power conference, though, they’ll move on up eventually. – Yesh Ginsburg
25 UCLA The #25 Bruins suffered a 42-30 loss at home against Oregon Saturday. This is the second loss in a row (both at home) for the Bruins, who have now lost all hope in contending for a playoff spot. In a game where the Bruins appeared to be both outplayed and coached, they will have no time to feel sorry as they go on the road to face Cal next week. – Kaden Kotinek
Others receiving votes: Duke (4), Kentucky (4), Washington (2), Minnesota (2), Duke (1), LSU (1), Iowa (1)
