Amid all the uncertainty at quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the green and white have announced they will be talking to Kerry Joseph this weekend.
Tino Sunseri and Seth Doege have both taken turns in replacing starter Darian Durant as he continues to recover from elbow surgery. But taking on the venerable Joseph at this point brings up a number of questions. How much action will Joseph see if he’s signed? How short will Doege and Sunseri’s leashes be with a veteran in the picture? Finally, does the prospect of Joseph confirm that Darian Durant is done for the year?
Kerry Joseph announced his retirement this January, so it will be interesting to see how long until we see him in action. The 41-year-old QB had his championship success in Regina in 2007, but that was ages ago and he’s spent limited time behind center in recent years. This past June, Joseph took a coaching intern/guest position with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints to work in the offence under Head Coach Sean Payton. The CFL vet has clear coaching aspirations once he hangs up his cleats for good.
We will also wonder if this means the team brass has no confidence in Sunseri, despite his brilliant second half for the Riders against Calgary.
Time will tell whether the Riders are bringing Joseph in to be the Saskatchewan savior, or just to add some depth and a veteran presence.
