The Baltimore Ravens have terminated the contract of embattled running back Ray Rice after TMZ Sports released a new recording of Rice repeatedly striking his then-fiancee Janay Palmer. The video shows Rice and Palmer entering the elevator together, followed by Rice punching her in the face twice, with the second blow knocking her to the ground, seemingly unconscious. Rice is then seen dragging Palmer out of the elevator, as was seen in the previously-released recording of the incident.
Soon after Rice’s release, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that Rice has been suspended indefinitely by the league. The NFL, which was heavily criticized for only suspending Rice for two games, claimed that it had not seen the video of the incident until Monday morning. According to ESPN, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said, “We requested from law enforcement any and all information about the incident, including the video from inside the elevator. That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today.”
Rice, who plead not guilty to a third-degree assault charge, has since wed Palmer and publicly apologized for the incident. He is currently taking part in a diversion program that, upon completion, could lead to the charges against him being dropped.
