Jon Jones Injures Ankle, Out of UFC 178

It looks like fight fans are going to have to wait a little longer to see Jon Jones fight Daniel Cormier. The current UFC light-heavyweight champion has injured his leg during, causing the fight to be postponed from UFC 178 to UFC 182. News of the postponement was first announced on Fox Sports 1, thought the exact nature of the injury was not revealed.  Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting quoted unnamed sources saying it is a torn meniscus in his left knee and a sprained ankle.

LWOS’ own Dr. Aaron Robbins recently discussed Alexander Gustafsson’s and Mike Rhodes’ meniscus injuries, and what that type injury means in terms of treatment and recovery.

Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will now main event the card, as his title fight against Chris Cariaso has been moved from a co-main event slot on UFC 177 to the prime spot on the card at UFC 178.  UFC 178 goes on September 27th, 2014 live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier’s feud broke into mainstream media early last week in main part to a brawl during a stare-down at a press conference for UFC 178.  Further comments between the two on social media led to a war of words behind the scenes in ESPN’s studios.  The hype the fight was receiving was huge and UFC 178 was expected to be the highest selling UFC pay-per-view of 2014.

UFC 182 takes place on January 3rd, 2015 also in Las Vegas, Nevada.
