Huston Street, all-star closer for the San Diego Padres, is being traded to the Los Angeles Angels; according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. The trade has been agreed upon, but will not be official until both teams finish their games Friday night.
The trade will be Huston Street and one Padres prospect going to LA for four prospects from the Angels. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that Taylor Lindsey is one of the players who will be headed to San Diego, and other rumors have surfaced R.J. Alvarez and Jose Rondon will join Lindsey going to the Padres.
The Angels are getting an incredible closer in this trade, as Street is 24-for-25 in save opportunities this season with a 1.09 ERA. He also has a 0.79 WHIP and 34 strikeouts in 33 innings this season.
This is exactly what the Angels needed. LA went into Friday with the second-best record in the AL, but their blown save total was among the worst in the American League.
If the reports and rumors are true, San Diego will get some solid prospects that they will look to develop into good big-league players. Taylor Lindsey is hitting .247 in the minors with eight home runs this year; solid numbers that he will look to build on. As for the other two rumored prospects going to the Padres, they are performing even better that Lindsey. Alvarez is a relief pitcher in the minors who currently boasts a 0.33 ERA, with a 0.85 WHIP, and 38 strikeouts this season. As for Rondon, he is a shortstop in the minors, and currently has a .327 batting average. He also has eight stolen bases, all in High-A this season.
The Padres gave up a huge asset in Huston Street, who is going to be a huge boost for the Angels, but they are hoping that the prospects they get in return will allow them to continue to improve and build a team to compete in the MLB.
