Cal Bears Zach Kline: What Could've Been

The Portland Tribune reported Monday night that the redshirt freshman from Danville, California has told Oregon State’s coaches that he intends to play for the Beavers. Per the Tribune, Kline plans to attend junior college during the spring semester, sit out the 2014 season, and be eligible for the 2015 campaign.

Coming into the 2013 season, most fans assumed that Kline would be the starter. Like expected, the coaches set up a QB battle but it was Jared Goff who ran away with the spot, not Kline.

No one is disappointed in Jared Goff and if the Bears had a chance to start the season over again he would still be the starter, but one has to wonder how Zach Kline would’ve done as a starter for the Bears.

He did come off the bench for seven appearances, completing 52.4 percent of his 82 passes for 5.4 yards an attempt and a 3-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Note that some of those stats came from playing Stanford and Oregon, two of the best teams in college football.

“I just think from what the coaches have told me, I have a better opportunity somewhere else,” Kline said. “They put it to me straight and in a professional way, which I appreciate … It’s clear that Jared’s the guy. They told me, ‘If you want to start, you should go somewhere else.'”

Now he may be playing against California. Who knows? Maybe he will become an Aaron Rodgers or Philip Rivers? He has a good arm with decent awareness. With smart coaching, Kline could be very good as he is loaded with potential, just like our own Jared Goff.
