Daniel Spohn Puts TUF Behind Him

Daniel Spohn is looking to make a statement this Sunday by taking out fellow TUF 19 castmate Patrick Walsh.  As with most who have been in the house before him, his expectations are high. With a full training camp, he believes he can put together some wins in the always-tough UFC Light-Heavyweight division.

Spohn arrived on the Ultimate Fighter scene courtesy of a vicious knockout of Tyler King in only 15 seconds, which earned him his stay in the house. Frankie Edgar commented that it was one of the most brutal knockouts that he had ever seen in real life. He then outclassed Todd Monaghan to get to the semi-finals, but fell short in a back-and-forth battle against Matt Van Buren. After the fight, Dana White commented that it was easily the fight of the season–which bodes well for Spohn as White is known to have those types of fighters on the fight card at the finale.  In fact, Spohn will open up the main prelims in his bout against Walsh.

In my interview with Spohn, he clearly noted how rewarding his experience with the Ultimate Fighter was, but relayed how elated he was when the season ended and he was able to go see his wife and four children.  He currently resides in Ohio and trains at Ronin MMA in Columbus. He mentioned he is happy to have a full training camp as he trains for Walsh and plans to display his full skillset.

In regards to his fight this Sunday, Spohn noted, “I feel great for this camp and being in Ohio provides me a great crop of wrestlers to help prepare for Walsh’s wrestling.”  He also has been working a lot on his striking and has improved his accuracy quite a bit and is excited to display his arsenal of weapons.

When asked whether he plans to stay at LHW or move down to MW, he mentioned that in the off-season he walks around at 230 lbs. He feels good with the weight cut this time and has a very positive vibe about the upcoming fight.  He feels better training close to home so he gets to see his family, an that has put him in a good mental state, not having the added pressures of being away from home for an extended period of time.

Spohn reiterated that his fight with Walsh is definitely a fight worth seeing. He would love to get either a Fight or Performance of the Night bonus and plans to leave everything in the cage as he goes to battle with a tough opponent this Sunday.
