The veteran tight end did not report for the 49ers mini camp and when questioned about it he responded “It’s all about getting paid what you deserve”. Vernon Davis is seeking a new contract from the team and wants to make sure that his future is taken care of before he gets back to business, he said “I have to worry about my future first”.
Davis still has 2 years remaining on a $42.7 million contract but has decided he is playing at a stronger level than he has before and has earned a new, big money deal. He has been quick to mention anecdotes of people close to him spending too much and having to borrow money, Davis wants to make certain that he and his family are never put in that position. He has also made it clear to the 49ers that he knows he can get a payday from another team and isn’t worried about the contract situation and he won’t be “losing any sleep” over the dispute.
Davis has also mentioned that he agrees with Saints tight-end Jimmy Graham that modern tight-ends should be paid as wide receivers, which is an increasing trend with players in a similar position to the two star players.
How does this Vernon Davis Holdout end?
I believe that Davis will be awarded his deal due to the fact he is still such a huge part of the offense. A deal will be made to make the two parties happy but it will be tough to give the tight end a contract and make sure you keep other vital players such as Alex Boone, who is also seeking a new contract.
