Lightning Acquire Jason Garrison From Canucks

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired defenseman Jason Garrison and the rights to Jeff Costello from the Canucks in exchange for the 50th-overall pick. Vancouver’s seventh-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft is also acquired by Tampa Bay in the deal.

Garrison, 29, tied a career-high in points with 33 last season in 81 games with Vancouver (7 G, 26 A). He recently signed a 6-year contract worth $27.6 million with the Canucks on July 1, 2012. As for career totals, the undrafted blueliner has tallied 108 points in 318 games with the Florida Panthers and the Canucks along with 166 penalty minutes.

The White Rock, BC, native had a full no-trade clause, but waived it in order for the trade to be finalized. With the departure of star forward Ryan Kesler as well, Vancouver seems to be relieving cap space in order to add a key piece or two to their lineup through free agency (Goaltender Ryan Miller has been involved in rumors surrounding VAN).

Costello, 23, was drafted in the 5th round (#146 overall) by the Senators in 2009 and was shipped off to the Canucks at this year’s trade deadline in March. The Milwaukee, WI, native spent four years at Notre Dame University scoring 41 goals and 41 assists in 145 games.
