Monte Morris, Matt Thomas play big role in First YCCL Games

Iowa State duo Matt Thomas and Monte Morris returned to the YMCA Capital City League on Wednesday and shot lights out. The reason of Matt Thomas’ absence was from receiving an OWI on the day before the league started. Thomas was very proffessional and upfront about his OWI, and no consequences have been announced. Monte Morris, however, was cross seas playing for a USA youth team. Read about each game below, and visit the YCCL twitter (@ycapcity) for the box scores. Also, you can follow me on twitter (@cfchangs9) for in game updates.

Game 1: Final/Overtime: ADIO Chiropractic (3-2) 122, Renaissance Granite and Quartz (3-2) 118

Kale Abrahamson (ADIO-Drake ’15 So.) has been the playmaker for ADIO this season leading them to a 2-2 record coming into this game. However, page hasn’t had the help he received on Wednesday Night.

Monte Morris (ADIO-Iowa State So.) and Matt Thomas (ADIO-Iowa State So.) Made both of their 2014 season debuts Wednesday scoring 29 and 30 points while Abrahamson added 18.

The team showed even more chemistry than which they have been, and winning this one puts them in a tie for second place in the YCCL Standings.

Game 2: Walnut Creek YMCA (4-1) 124, Coca Cola Atlantic Bottling (1-4) 99

Jameel McKay (YMCA-Iowa State Jr.) didn’t go for many slams on Wednesday Night, but still managed to put up 20 points and 16 rebounds in the win for YMCA. Hallice Cooke (YMCA-Iowa State ’15 So.) added 31 points.

Team Coca Cola’s struggles continue this season after they beat Renaissance Granite last week. SDW and Dustin Hogue are doing what they can, but the team is quickly falling behind.

Game 3: Capital Orthopedics (3-2) 128, Phoenix Renewable Resources (2-3) 120

Clayton Custer (CO-Iowa State Fr.) was shooting on Wednesday and took it to the house with 45 points in another proud performance for the Iowa State newcomer.

Custer has proved to be a big threat on the defensive side this season and might even see some court time at Iowa State this season. The a Cyclones released their Non-Conference Schedule and it is shown to be one of the easiest they’ve seen in the past decade.

*Injury Update: Naz Long (PRR-Iowa State Jr.) suffered from a groin injury and sat the 2nd game of the season because of a groin injury, but was able to come back for game 4. Long has now further injured his groin and will look to return in about a week and a half.
