The Baltimore Orioles have placed the 2013 American League home run champ, Chris Davis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique. The Orioles were hoping that Davis would be able avoid the DL, and just miss a couple days with the injury, but an MRI showed more damage than was originally anticipated. “A little bit worse than what we thought it was going to be,” Chris Davis said. “Strain, I guess is what we’re calling it. Obviously, the oblique. It’s kind of crazy because I don’t feel terrible. I’ve never had anything like this before. I figured it would just be a few days and then we’d forget about it.”
However after the doctors looked at the MRI results, the team made the decision to give Davis a couple of weeks off.
“It looks like we’re probably going to have to DL him tomorrow. It looks like that’s going to probably happen. I think that’s where everybody’s leaning,” Showalter said after the Orioles’ 3-2, 10-inning win over the Kansas City Royals.
“It’s something we think will take the DL period at a minimum, so we’ll start with that tomorrow.”
Davis was surprised by the doctors prognosis, but is ready to do what is necessary to come back as soon as possible. The team did not estimate how long they think Davis might be out.
“As far as I know right now it’s 15-day DL, so hopefully things will go well and I’ll be able to bounce back quickly,” Davis said.
“I could obviously feel it last night. I was pretty sore today and having the MRI results and everything, I guess the DL is the best choice right now. From everybody I’ve talked to, basically what they’ve said is it’s just something that could be a lot worse if you neglect it. For right now, just keep it simple and hopefully, like I said, be back soon,” Davis said.
Davis was hitting .250/.372/.382 with two home runs this season. It wasn’t the start Davis was looking for after hitting .286/.370/.634 with 53 home runs last year.
The injury leaves the Orioles in quite the predicament at first base. Nick Markakas made his third career start (and first since 2011) at first on Saturday. The teams two Triple-A level first basemen are Brett Wallace (.167/.197/.208 with no homers in 72 at-bats this year) and Chris Marrero (.210/.306/.371 in 62 at-bats this season).
