Attending the official conference to introduce Brendan Shanahan as the Toronto Maple Leafs President and alternate governor of MLSE, ESPN and TSN reporter Pierre LeBrun tweeted a photo of the setup for the conference. It looks less like a professional sports press conference and more like a television set on Leafs TV.
Did I say Leafs TV? Maybe I meant the new set for Hockey Night in Canada?
This isn’t an insult to Toronto Maple Leafs fans, who I’m sure wish their team wasn’t so obsessed over by the likes of Glenn Healy and Don Cherry. I’m sure they’d love to hear a little less about every little thing their team does off the ice and maybe more discussion about what really matters on the ice. But for every other Canadian, it’s like Bieber Fever every Saturday night. Non stop Toronto talk on CBC. And flip to TSN? Non stop Toronto talk on the “Toronto Sports Network”! And hey, Rogers Sportsnet already has homer Joe Bowen and every bit of Leafs talk. You just can’t escape it, regardless of who you cheer for in Canada.
So looking at the set up, it’s no surprise one might blink and think that’s what we will see when Rogers, now co-majority owner of MLSE, takes over national broadcasting of the NHL in Canada. Let’s hope not, and lets hope that in the playoffs they find some time to talk about the one Canadian team who actually made the playoffs.
