Athleticism: C-
Average athlete. Is not particularly quick changing directions or moving laterally. Range is below average and will not be able to play linebacker for a 43 team. Is more of a north-south mover, but lacks acceleration in either direction. Able to at least drop into short zones and can close passing lanes and tip passes with his long arms and tall frame.
Pass Rushing: C+
Fairly average as a pass rusher, lacking the explosive element to his game of a double digit sack artist. Does not have much flexibility to bend the edge, and lacks the closing speed to seal the deal. Best attribute is his bull rush when he can collapse the edge and put his blocker on his heels. Lacks much of a pass rush arsenal and could benefit from some polishing.
Run Stopping: A-
Strong enough to play either as an edge linebacker in a 34, or play with his hand in the ground in a 43. Controls blockers and rarely gets pushed backwards. Typically shows the ability to get linemen on skates and can get penetration into the backfield. Does not disengage as cleanly from blocks as would expected for someone with his skillset.
Technique: B+
Has long arms with a rangy frame that lends itself to making tackles. Strong to pull down runners and can deliver a heavy blow on contact. Able to drag down ballcarriers with only one hand disengaged. Could get exposed in space and does not have the quickness to corral shiftier backs.
Intangibles: C+
Football instincts are rather average, but plays with good enough effort on the field. Only a two-year starter, and seemed to regress as a junior. Would have been better served returning for his senior year and proving his 2012 season wasn’t a fluke.
Red Flags: None
Bottom Line: Hubbard’s 2013 season really hindered his shot at a day one selection in May, and really seems to have made a mistake by declaring early. However, unlike many other Alabama prospects, Hubbard’s medical report is fairly clean, but lacks the great skillset his past teammates have had. Hubbard can become an impact run defender at the next level and should be able to fill a role on most any team, likely as a starter.
Comparison: Chike Okeafor
Grade: 8.1 (3rd Round)
