Athleticism: C
Has very average range and change of direction. Straight line speed is adequate. Lumbers in pursuit and struggles to make plays from the opposite side of the field. Has a big frame for a linebacker and has a collegiate defensive end build.
Power: B-
Strong run defender. Has a stout frame for a linebacker and carries a lot of power in his lower body. Can anchor against TEs and even linemen on occasion. Can get hung up on TE blocks too often, however, and is inconsistent in his ability to disengage. Needs to play with better hand fight, and at times looks content to be blocked. Has natural leverage when taking on linemen and tight ends. Played as an end/down linebacker with the Irish and should benefit from playing as 43 linebacker in this area.
Technique: B
Very strong tackler. Running backs buckle underneath his weight and rarely lets the ball carrier get away from him. Has not had to make many tackles in space, an area which he will have to prove himself to play at the next level. Is more of a heavy tackler, than a physical striker.
Third-Down: C-
Is no great shakes in coverage, but has his role. Does not have the athleticism to play well in zone outside of short drops. Is better in man coverage due to his ability to play physical with bigger receivers and tight ends. Lacks the pass rush ability to remain at end or as a rush linebacker. Capable of getting pressure on blitzes, but does not have much of a pass rush arsenal.
Intangibles: D+
Has adequate football instincts and plays with a fair motor. May lack the stamina to play as a full-time starter throughout an entire game at linebacker. Three year starter and four year contributor with the Irish. Has a lot of questions to answer regarding the Lizzy Seeberg sexual assault, and could greatly hurt his draft stock.
Red Flags: Character Concerns
Bottom Line: A powerful run defender and situational pass rusher, Shembo carries a lot of value as a late round pick, should a team invest one in him. Shembo’s biggest obstacle to the NFL is his off the field past which ultimately could cost him a lot of guaranteed money. His best fit is on the strong-side as a linebacker in a 43, who could also contribute in a 34 in a lesser role.
Comparison: Jarrett Johnson
Grade: 7.6 (5th Round)
