The Edmonton Oilers rebuild continues as the team has traded right wing Ales Hemsky to the Ottawa Senators for a 2015 3rd round pick and a 2014 5th round pick ahead of the NHL trade deadline.
The 30-year-old Hemsky is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. He has nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points in 55 games with the Oilers this season. With the Oilers once again out of the playoff chase they have moved the veteran, and longest current continuous serving Oiler, for assets that may help them in the future. The Oilers will retain 50% of Hemsky’s salary and cap hit to make the deal happen.
Hemsky was originally drafted in the first round, 13th overall, by the Oilers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He has played his entire 11-year NHL career with Edmonton, putting up 142 goals and 335 assists for 477 points in 652 career NHL games.
The Senators currently sit four points out of a playoff spot in the tight Eastern Conference. However, they must pass four teams to get that second wild-card spot that is currently held by the Columbus Blue Jackets.
