Athleticism: A
Has very good speed for a TE. Accelerates very quickly into his routes. Showed the ability to stretch the seam and run deep routes to challenge linebackers and DBs. Is a tough runner after the catch and routinely had to be dragged down by multiple defenders. Used sparingly as a ball-carrier during his final 2 seasons for the Ducks, but looked very good in that role and showed off quick feet. Could be used situationally at FB.
Hands: C+
Did not appear to be much of a leaper on tape, and did not make catches that were above his head or outside the numbers. Does not show the ability to extend and pluck the ball. Is more of a body or frame catcher. Can take contact and hold onto the ball, and will protect it with his body when anticipating a big hit.
Technique: C
Lined up on the line, in the slot, out wide, and in the backfield. Needs work with his route-running. Has only had one full year as a starter and played in a wide-open spread at Oregon. Able to get himself open downfield. Did face press much in college but looked deadly quick getting a clean release.
Blocking: D-
Is only adequate as a blocker. Is strong enough to sustain against linebackers and DBs, but will get blown off the ball vs. DEs. Does not always square up as a blocker and will whiff let defenders blow by him. Will not get much movement run-blocking, and was not used in a pass blocking role. Agile enough to be a move blocker. Gets too sloppy and is not very intense
Intangibles: F
Decision-making, accountability, and coachability will all be heavily investigated by NFL decision-makers. Pled guilty to cocaine possession late in 2013. Has faced unsubstantiated rumors about steroid use stemming back to his high school days. Came from a rough upbringing. His social media presence has also been deleterious to his reputation.
Red Flags: Off-field Issues, Character Concerns
Bottom Line: Lyerla presents a huge risk for any team that has the guts to draft him. A lot of his stock will hinge on how well he performs at the combine, not in drills, but in team meetings and interviews. The talent is there to be a very functional and effective contributor in the NFL, but he needs to get himself on the right path to realize his potential. Is scheme versatile and could be a #2 for a team with Dual-TE sets.
Comparison: Ed Dickson
Grade: 7.4 (5th Round)
