Report: Kings and Nets Make A Swap

Its officially NBA trade deadline season, and we have our first swap.  According to Yahoo Sports, The Brooklyn Nets have agreed to a deal to acquire guard Marcus Thornton from the Sacramento Kings for guard Jason Terry and centre/power forward Reggie Evans.  According to the report there are no draft picks involved.

Report: Kings and Nets Make A Swap

The 26-year-old Thornton was struggling in Sacramento averaging just 8.3 points per game, and shooting just 38.1% on the year.  Two years ago he averaged 18.7 points a game on 43.8% shooting and looked like a key piece of Sacramento’s future.. He has one year left on his deal due $8.6 million next season.

Terry was part of the big offseason deal between the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets.  The 36-year-old is averaging 4.5 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game for the Nets.  He is struggling shooting just 36.2% from the field and 37.8 % from behind the three point line.  He is signed through the end of next season, and will be paid $5.4 million.

The 33-year-old Evans is a veteran big-man, who is merely a role player for the Kings bench.  He is averaging 2.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game for the Nets this season.  Evans was a starter who averaged 11.1 points per game last season, but fell behind Kevin Garnett and Mason Plumlee in the Nets rotation this year.  He is also signed through next season at $1.8 million.

Essentially the Kings did this to save themselves money, and to get to contracts that could be easier to move in the summer, than the big deal that Thornton has.  The Nets hope that a change of scenery will re-invigorate Thornton’s scoring touch.
