Bryson DeChambeau has cleared the air regarding his reported “beef” with Masters champion Rory McIlroy. DeChambeau was in impressive form at the beginning of the Masters, but the 31-year-old was unable to carry his impressive form into the final round. However, he still managed to improve on his career performance at Augusta National, as he finished tied for fifth.
The American famously defeated McIlroy at the 2024 U.S. Open but came up short against the Northern Irishman when he faced him in the final round at Augusta National. Fans and media began to speculate that there was animosity between the pair, and DeChambeau revealed after the tournament what led to the perceived tension.
“He didn’t talk to me once all day…,” the 31-year-old revealed. “He was just like-just being focused, I guess…”
DeChambeau Insists There’s No Beef Between Him And Mcllory
DeChambeau’s comments became the talk of the hour after the final round at Augusta National. However, he has now taken the opportunity to explain what really transpired between them, insisting that both his and McIlroy’s attitude was built on the moment of the game.
“He was just being stoic the whole day; there was nothing more,” DeChambeau clarified. “I was like, he just didn’t talk to me. It wasn’t a slight; there’s no beef or anything.”
“It was like what Tiger (Woods) did to Tony (Finau). It’s the same combo, but it wasn’t meant to be in a bad way, and that’s how things happen. I wish people would not interpret things, but, you know, people will do that.”
Tiger Woods famously rejected Tony Finau’s attempt to talk to him as they faced off in the final round of the 2019 Masters. Woods was in search of his fifth Masters title and Finau let the former World No. 1 be after he was rebuffed.
“No Problem Congratulating McIlroy”
DeChambeau also insisted that he was happy to congratulate McIlroy on the completion of his career Grand Slam. “I didn’t know who would win, so I couldn’t say congratulations to him, even though I would have 100 percent said congratulations,” he said. The 31-year-old in fact congratulated McIlroy on his X account following his victory last Sunday.
“He deserved this one; he fought his butt off and absolutely did what he needed to do to win. It looks scary sometimes, but it was a roller coaster for everybody. And, you know, we gave everybody a roller coaster last year at the U.S. Open. He did it this year at the Masters. So, it was fun to be a part of history,” DeChambeau said regarding Mcllory’s historic victory at Augusta National.
