Big Money Coming in for Genesis Invitational LA Relief Efforts

With the Genesis Invitational underway, it is important to remember the events and the tragedy that currently surround it.  From the relocation due to the fires to the frantic reorganization to keep it going, as well as a high-profile player withdrawing, a lot was happening with this event.  As the Invitational commences though, it’s not just the drives and putts that garnering attention. At the fore is a charitable component with the event to help those in need in Los Angeles.

The Genesis Invitational Relocation

Originally the Genesis Invitational was to be played at the Riviera in Los Angeles.  It has been the event’s home after all.  Those plans changed after the wildfires tore their way through the city in January.  Now the event will be taking place in Torrey Pines, a course located 103 miles south in the San Diego area.  In the original announcement for the relocation, Tiger Woods made a call to anyone listening to help out with relief efforts for the people of Los Angeles.

‘Birdies For Good’ During Genesis Invitational

In light of the Los Angeles wildfires, Tiger Woods decided that the Genesis Invitational should be dedicated to relief efforts.  The event now has a program to raise more money for the city.  This program is being called “Birdies for Good”.  Essentially, any player who gets a birdie or better will trigger the PGA to make a donation starting at $300.

  • Birdie: $300
  • Hole in one: $10,000

Other Players’ LA Relief Contributions

Along with the news of birdies for good, other players have announced their own versions of birdies for good.  Collin Morikawa announced that he will donate $1,000 per birdie and $2,000 per Eagle, while Sahith Theegala has promised $100 per birdie and $250 per eagle.  Both players have done this during previous events at Pebble Beach and the West Coast Swing.

Other Funds Being Raised

There are other ways the Genesis Invitational will be donating to relief efforts.  Ticket fees will be used for donations.  Merchandise sales will also be going to relief, both the Torrey Pines shop and the tournament shop will be donating 100% of profits to charity.  The vehicles used during the tournament will also be donated to various nonprofits.  This will be around 100 vehicles used by the players valued at $7.5 million.

Overall the Genesis Invitational is looking to help out where it can with its home of Los Angeles.  In the announcement on the PGA Tour website, they left a link for fans to contribute where they wish.  Above all, it is important for everyone to contribute what they can.  Los Angeles has been the home of the Genesis Invitational and the players and fans want to do what they can to help.
