The Boston Red Sox are World Series Champions, but the city also has a new Judas, with their star center fielder not only leaving the team, but also signing with the “Evil Empire.” The New York Yankees have signed Jacoby Ellsbury to a 7-year contract.
The deal is said to be worth $153 million. This is significant as it eclipses the $142 million contract that was the magic number for the contract that Carl Crawford signed with the Red Sox prior to the 2011 season.
Ellsbury, 30, batted .298/.355/.426 with nine home runs and 52 stolen bases in 134 games this past season for the World Series-champion Red Sox.
It is expected that Ellsbury will lead off and play centre field for the Yankees.
The move also seems to take the Yankees out of the Robinson Cano sweepstakes. The team has been nowhere close to an agreement with their star second baseman and with reports surfacing today that the Seattle Mariners are willing to give Cano the type of money and term that they Yankees will not, it appears that both sides will soon move on.
