Consistent, discipline and clutch. These three words perfectly describe quarterback, Russell Wilson, and he continues to show week after week, that he is indeed consistent, disciplined and most importantly, he’s clutch.
Wilson, always calm and poised, has proven already this season that he can find ways to win the cards seem to be stacked against him. When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were up 21 to zip in front of Seattle’s notorious home crowd during week nine, Wilson and the rest of the Hawks kept their head in the game and came back to win 27-24.
If Russell was feeling any pressure on Monday night, you would have never have known it. If there was any stress being up against being up against Hall of fame contender, Drew Brees and having a win mean the Seahawks, in week 14, would clinch a playoff spot and be one step closer to home field advantage, you would have never known it by looking at Wilson who was cool, calm, and collected during warm ups.
Wilson’s discipline may have been part of what undid the Saints – Russell has studied Brees since he was a pre-teen and all that studying paid off.
Although the Seahawks were favored to win against the Saints by two field goals – there were rumblings of the Saints pulling off an upset. Those rumblings were quickly quieted when right off the bat, Brees was sacked by Cliff Avril having the ball pop right into the waiting hands of defensive lineman, Michael Bennett, who ran it down the field 22 yards for his first NFL touchdown.
That set the tempo for the game. Odds makers might have put Seattle up to win against the Saints but no one ever suspected it would be the 34-7 blowout that it was.
Ever consistent, Monday night Wilson had 300 yards passing and got his 22nd win. He is now tied with Ben Roethlisberger for the most wins in his first two seasons as a quarterback and he still has four games where he has an opportunity to break that record.
But breaking records isn’t on the forefront of Wilson’s mind as he and his team head into week 14 at 11-1. His mind is on continuing to win games.
After Monday night’s blowout against New Orleans, Ray Lewis told Wilson he had his vote for MVP. Wilson smiled and made mention that running back Marshawn Lynch should be up for that, “I’m just trying to win games,” he said. The man is humble too.
Now that the Seahawks have a spot in the playoffs – their next goal is to play in front of the record-breaking 12th Man at home.
The Seahawks next face the 8-4 San Francisco 49ers – a true West Coast rivalry. Wilson will be matched up against Colin Kaepernick.
The Hawks are three games ahead of the second-place 49ers. A win against them Dec. 8 will clinch the division for the Seahawks and gain them a playoff game in Seattle in front of their super loud crowd.
Wilson will go into enemy territory next Sunday but we already know what we will see in him – someone who is disciplined, consistent and most importantly – clutch.
