So what happens with the BCS now? If you missed the Iron Bowl last night, don’t worry; ESPN Classic will be showing that game for years. Between Michigan-Ohio State and the Iron Bowl, yesterday has to be in the running for one of the greatest college football Saturdays of all time. Here’s what we learned:
-Chris Davis Jr. will never pay for a drink in an Auburn bar again. Once his NCAA eligibility is up, of course (wink, wink).
-Alabama’s kicker should probably enter the witness protection program.
-Congratulations to Missouri on reaching the SEC title game. I don’t think anyone expected them to get there in just their second year of SEC play; I know I didn’t. When you consider that they had to play multiple games with a backup QB, it’s really impressive.
-They didn’t make it easy for themselves, but congrats also to Duke, who hung on and beat North Carolina to win the ACC Coastal. I don’t see them coming close to beating Florida State in the ACC title game, but the Blue Devils will get a trip to a good bowl game, and they earned it. I think we’re seeing why college football people have said for years that David Cutcliffe is a very good coach.
-I don’t dislike Brady Hoke’s call to go for two at the end of the game, down 42-41. I do dislike the play that was called. However, I LOVE the way Michigan played yesterday- on offense, at least- after a month or so of mediocre, up-and-down football.
-Have the defenses arrived at the Big House yet?
-More congratulations, this time to Arizona State for beating Arizona and earning the right to host Stanford in the Pac-12 title game.
-Looks like UCLA will have bragging rights around Los Angeles for another year.
-Good on LSU to rally with not only backups, but freshmen, at both QB and center. Both guys should have some added confidence should either need to play in a bowl game.
-Some love for the MAC: Tuesday night, Northern Illinois QB Jordan Lynch broke his own single-game rushing record for a quarterback with 321 yards. In one game. In the same game, RB Cameron Stingily hit the 1,000-yard mark, giving NIU its first-ever season with two 1,000-yard rushers (the other, of course, is Lynch).
-Something interesting in the Egg Bowl: Ole Miss giving freshman DE Robert Nkemdiche, the top recruit in the country last year, a few snaps as a running back.
-San Jose State ruined Fresno State’s bid for a perfect season in a game that featured 1,382 yards of offense and 114 points.
-Bo Pelini, if you lose your shit on the sidelines at officials, don’t be surprised when your players follow suit. Just saying.
And of course, an epic weekend in college football can’t leave us without a burning question:
-If Florida State is #1, who’s #2? Auburn? Unbeaten Ohio State, even though they nearly lost to a team that trailed both UConn and Akron this season? I would go Auburn myself; they played a far tougher schedule and took down an unbeaten #1 team. Their one loss was to a #6 LSU team, while OSU hasn’t faced a team ranked higher than #16. We’ll see how the pollsters feel.
