After just three months on the job, new Dallas Mavericks general manager Gersson Rosas has resigned from the position. The 35-year-old Rosas was hired by the Mavericks to be their General Manager, leaving the Rockets front office this past summer. He had been with the Rockets for 9 years rising through the ranks, and was named vice-president of basketball operations in 2012.
“I made the personal decision to resign as general manager of the Dallas Mavericks after determining that the position was not the best fit for me at this point in my career,” Rosas said. “The decision was made solely by me, as I firmly believe this change is in my best interest.”
Various reports from around the web, including those of ESPN’s Marc Stein who was first on the story, indicate that the reason for the move was a power struggle between Rosas and Mavericks President of Basetball Operations Don Nelson. Apparently Nelson felt that Rosas was coming in as a support to him, and Rosas felt he would be given power over basketball decisions. When that power didn’t come, Rosas decided to leave the organization.
“I was disappointed when Gersson told me of his decision, but I understand and all of us wish him the best,” Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said in a statement Tuesday.
Rosas is known for his innovative approach including uttilizing advanced stats and analytics in evaluating personnel decisions.
