Saving Private Ryan: What is the future for Head Coach Rex Ryan?

The New York Jets are no strangers to the spotlight, whether it be Tim Tebow, a foot fetish, Rex Ryan’s odd tattoos, or quarterback trouble.  This offseason there could be a new headline for the New York Jets; Should Rex Ryan return as head coach?

Rex Ryan was far from the hot seat in his first two seasons with the Jets, appearing in the AFC Championship twice in a row, in 2009 and 2010.  He looked a great fit for New York – the fact that he was candid in front of the cameras of NYC was certainly a plus.  But much has changed, as he has not seen the playoffs since then, nor has he seen a winning record.  If there is one thing we know about New Yorkers, it’s that they like a winner.

I think the Jets could not afford to lose Rex Ryan’s ‘never give up’ attitude.  It’s easy to say a coach should be fired, but isn’t it important to be certain who you’re getting is better than the one you have?  For me, there may not be a better coach available to really ignite Geno Smith’s potential, along with Muhammad Wilkerson, Dee Milliner, Demario Davis, Sheldon Richardson, and the rest of the young talent that lies within the organization. Rex Ryan is well liked by players – he’s always been a players’ coach.

There is no question that Rex Ryan has one of the great defensive minds in the NFL today, possibly only second too Dick Lebeau, the Steelers Defensive Coordinator,  since 1992. Rex Ryan could do more good than bad, and signing him to a 2-year contract couldn’t hurt the Jets, especially with no obvious choices to replace him.  I don’t feel waiting on a young coach is what’s best for a young team like the Jets considering their inexperience – they need experience not only on the field, but to guide them through the trials and tribulations of being a young NFL player.

Although he already turned down the Job, Bill Cowher would be the only coach who I would without hesitation prefer over Ryan. If Ryan were to stay, I could see him being potentially one of the better coaches in Jets history – although that doesn’t say much, it still would be great for Jets fans to see. He may not be Lombardi, Ditka, or even Belichick, but in my opinion “he’s on heck of a football coach.”

So now I would like to know your opinion:   Should Rex stay, or should he go?  Please vote below and feel free to leave a comment.
