What a Weekend for the SEC

This past weekend featured many big games in the SEC; LSU vs Georgia, Ole Miss vs Alabama, and A&M vs Arkansas.

Being week 5, conference play begins in college football.

Ole Miss vs Alabama

Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace came out of the gates swinging leading up to this tilt.  He claimed that Ole Miss has receivers and they can and will put points up on Alabama. Coming off a huge win vs Texas A&M, Alabama was sort of ready to shut up Bo Wallace and prove to everybody that Alabama is still the best team in College Football. Well Ole Miss defense showed up against Roll Tide to begin the game, only giving up 9 points in the first half.  However, their so called “gonna put points on Alabama” offense didn’t show up – at all. The second half was not any better than the first half for Ole Miss’ offense. They managed to drive down inside the red zone only 1 time and ended up turning the ball over on downs. Alabama’s defense showed up from start to finish and finished the game shutting out Ole Miss and their “Gonna Put Points on Bama” offense. Final score: 25-0, Alabama.

Georgia vs LSU

In the State next door and 274 miles away, the Georgia Bulldogs were hosting the LSU tigers in what was the greatest game of the day. This had a lot going on, including a QB returning to his old college – Zach Mettenberger, QB of the LSU Tigers, was the back-up at Georgia his freshmen year in college. After not getting the starting job at Georgia, Mettenberger transferred to LSU and was the starting QB his Junior season. This game had no breathing room, given the fact that the largest lead was 7 points – a real nail biter. Georgia took this game not because of a bad final drive by LSU, but because of their own defense. Yes, the defense did give up 41 points but they managed to stop LSU when the going got tough. Aaron Murray and the Georgia offense played an incredible game – almost perfect.  Every time LSU scored, Georgia answered. It was a great game. But nonetheless, Georgia played the better game in this one. Georgia takes this one, 44-41.

Texas A&M vs Arkansas

Now on to the Texas A&M vs Arkansas game. This game was a lot closer than anyone imagined. A&M stormed out early to a 17-7 lead and was looking to take this game by a lot. But Arkansas was hyped and ready to go for this game. They had no intention of losing this game 58-10 like last year’s game. Arkansas stormed back to make the halftime score 24-20. So in the second half Arkansas started with the football ready to pounce on their opportunity and take the lead over Texas A&M. But on just the 3rd play from scrimmage in the second half, Texas A&M CB Deshazor Everett picked off Arkansas QB Brandon Allen and took it all the way back for a huge touchdown for the Aggies. This put the Aggies up 11 and in great position to win this game.  Arkansas responded with a 4-play 75-yard drive and a touchdown, making the game 31-27. Texas A&M would respond with a 17-yard rushing touchdown by RB Trey Williams putting Texas A&M up 38-27. But just like all game long Arkansas responded with a TD, making the score 38-33. Trying to make this a field goal game, Arkansas went for two but failed to get it. So now the score is 38-33 heading into the 4th quarter. Texas A&M, the defense that has not shown up at all-all season long, showed up in the 4th quarter vs Arkansas; they shut out Arkansas in the 4th quarter. This game was a nail biter, but Texas A&M came out victorious and heads back to College Station for a 2-week wait until the Aggies take on Ole Miss in Oxford, Mississippi.

It was a wild weekend, but the main question is, who is going to beat Alabama? Who plays in the SEC championship? It is going to be a wild season and its only week 5!
